Toprak and Bilgiç from Türkiye evaluated the relationship between both preoperative and postoperative Prognostic Nutritional Index values and postoperative mortality in patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting surgery. They demonstrated that both preoperative and postoperative Prognostic Nutritional Index values are critical predictors of mortality risk in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting patients.

To investigate the relationship between the increase in cases with severe coronary artery disease and SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination, Çetinkaya and Taş from Italy retrospectively reviewed patients who presented to their center. Being the sole primary center in their region and the primary referral center for patients experiencing heart attacks in their region has allowed them to demonstrate any increase in cases compared to the pre-pandemic period. What are the results they found?

Impedance cardiography offers a potential alternative for hemodynamic assessment in pulmonary arterial hypertension as a noninvasive technique. Zhang et al from China compared this method with invazive method. Could it be a risk assessment method?

Taylan et al from Türkiye evaluated the protective effect of amifostine on acute toxicity in large vessels and the heart in rats with radiotherapy applied to the thorax. Amifostine is a prodrug that is converted in vivo by alkaline phosphatase to the active cytoprotective sulfhydryl compound. This substance has a protective effect on normal cells against the toxic effects of antineoplastic agents.

Following the encouraging results of several registries and trials, transcatheter aortic valve implantation has become standard therapy for aortic stenosis patients with intermediate or high operative risk for surgical treatment. Good procedural success and good clinical outcomes have been showed and very limited data exist on transcatheter aortic valve implantation in the setting of a preexisting mitral valve prosthesis regarding the technique, potential complications, and outcomes. Kıvrak et al from Türkiye present their single-center experience with this special patient cohort.

And an interesting case report, letters, e-page originals…
