Atherosclerosis, a complex and multifactorial disease, underpins many CVDs, including coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Its development is influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors. Recent research has provided new insights into the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and expanded our understanding of these processes, offering new perspectives on prevention, diagnosis, and management. AlRahimi et al from Saudi Arabia reviewed this complex issue.

Cheng et al from China aimed to find a gene for coronary artery disease (CAD) early diagnosis by detecting co-pathogenic target gene involved in CAD and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). And they found that CNTN1 was as a copathogenetic gene for CAD and PAH.

Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) is the main determinant of mortality in patients with pulmonary embolism. Thus, guidelines recommend the assessment of RVD with transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) or computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) among these patients. Erol et al from Türkiye investigated the agreement between TTE and CTPA for the detection of RVD.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are prevalent cardiovascular conditions in East Asia, with a complex interrelationship. The directionality of the causal impact of AF on HF risk remains uncertain. This study by Mei et al from China employs Mendelian randomization to investigate the potential causal effect of AF on HF in East Asian individuals.

Turinay Ertop et al from Türkiye analysed the effect of dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis, native thiol, total thiol and disulphide levels, disulphide/native thiol, disulphide/total thiol and native thiol/total thiol ratios on NT-proBNP, diastolic parameters and progression of HFpEF patients using a novel and automated method. The results showed that the oxidant/antioxidant balance is impaired in patients with HFpEF.
